This reddish-brown fine powder is obtained from the bark of the benzoin tree. Also known as gum Benjamin, it has a sweet, vanilla-like aroma. It is used in both the perfumery and incense-making industries as a fragrance stabilizer and fixative. It slows the dispersion of essential oils and other fragrances contained within perfumes and incense sticks into the air.
Benzoin gum is harvested by making triangular cuts into the bark of the tree. Once a flow of gum is established from the tree, it is collected and then allowed to air dry in the sunlight where it will harden into a resin-like substance. Once it hardens, it is then ground into a fine powder. It can tend to get sticky and lumpy again if exposed to too much heat.
