With a slightly sweet, buttery flavor and creamy, somewhat crunchy texture, Brazil nuts are a great alternative to almonds, cashews, and walnuts as a healthy snack all on their own although they are commonly mixed with other types of nuts. Raw brazil nuts can be used to make Brazil nut milk and cheese. They are a wonderful nut to use in smoothies, cereals and power bars.
Growing up to 160 feet tall, the Brazil nut tree is one of the largest trees that grow in the Amazon rainforests. They are native to the Guianas, Venezuela, Brazil, eastern Colombia, eastern Peru and eastern Bolivia which is the largest exporter. The trees produce fruit best in pristine, undisturbed forests. This is because the fruit is pollinated by a variety of large-bodied bees that are only found in the wild. They don't grow or produce fruit well if grown on plantations due to the lack of these bees. Given this, most Brazil nuts come from wild collection rather than from plantations. The nut itself is actually a seed from the fruit of the tree. The fruit resembles a coconut with a hard, woody shell which contains anywhere from 8 to 24 triangular seeds that are packed within the shell similar to segments of an orange.
Brazil nuts are an excellent source of dietary fiber. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals such as thiamin, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, manganese, and zinc. They are also the richest dietary source of selenium, a mineral known to have antioxidant properties. They contain 14% protein, 12% carbohydrates, and 66% fat. The fat composition is 23% saturated fat, 38% monounsaturated fat, and 32% polyunsaturated fat in the form of Omega-6 fatty acids.
