Also known as Jamaica pepper, myrtle pepper, pimenta, and pimento, allspice comes from the dried unripe berry of the Pimenta dioica tree native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico, and Central America, but now cultivated in many warm parts of the world. The name allspice came from the English who valued the flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
Allspice is an important ingredient in Caribbean cuisine used in Jamaican jerk seasoning, moles, pickling, sausage, and curry powders. In the U.S., it is mostly used to make baked goods and desserts.
