Cloves are a popular ingredient in Asian, African, Near, and Middle East cuisines. In the U.S. they are commonly used as an ingredient in seasonal baked goods, desserts, and beverages. With a strong, sweet, and slightly astringent flavor with a warm undertone, it is common to use cloves in spice blends such as pumpkin pie spice. They pair well with many other foods and spices including cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, red wine, basil, onion, citrus peel, star anise, and pepper.
Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, Syzygium aromaticum. They are native to the Maluki Islands in Indonesia but are now cultivated in other parts of the world including Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and Brazil.
