Palm wax is used as a vegan replacement for beeswax in body care products and candles. It is derived from palm oil which is a a combination of olein (liquid palm oil) and stearine (vegetable fats). The wax is the vegetable fatty acids that are left after the oil has been separated out. It is primarily made up of tryglycerides that are bleached through the use of absorbent clay and deodorized through a high temperature heating process. The final product is an unscented, white to cream colored flake which is clear when melted. No pesticides, chemicals or solvents are used during the growing, harvesting or refining process.
Melting Point: 129-140 degrees F
Saponification Value: 195-205 (MgKOH/g).
Ingredients: 99% organic RBD palm wax hydrogenated to organic cosmetic specification
Food Grade: No; for cosmetic use only
Palm wax can be used as an ingredient for making body care products such as lip balms, creams and lotions. In creams and lotions, it will add structure to the final product. In lip balms and lip sticks, it acts as a hardener. As an ingredient for body care products, it can be added in any amount up to 100% depending on how hard or thick you want your final product. Smaller percentages of palm wax added to body care products will produce a mottling effect, medium percentages will make the product become opaque and larger percentages will produce a product with a crystallized appearance.
Palm wax can also be used as an ingredient for candle making either as an additive to other types of wax or completely on its own. Used as an additive, palm wax will help improve the burn time, harden the wax and help increase the fragrance retention. Used as an ingredient all on its on, palm wax will produce a candle that has a beautiful, crystallized appearance. This effect can be maximized by pouring wax at a high temperature (approximately 200 degrees F). As the candle cools, the crystallized appearance forms naturally.
All of our Palm Oil, Palm Fruit Shortening and Palm Wax products are certified by the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Because we are a company valuing sustainability with firmly rooted values in healthy living and stewardship of our planet, we believe in third party certification where available. We use the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to certify all of our palm fruit products. All suppliers are in good standing with the RSPO, and are certified sustainable:
We source our Palm Wax from Ecuador, where there are no Orangutans. No pesticides were introduced to the landscape or used on the farms. We have taken the extra step to contact our Palm Wax supplier and question their social impact and land and water use practices. Our supplier was happy to tell us they give 1% of their sales annually to social and environmental stewardship programs. Their plantations are planted on land that has been previously farmed, so no rainforest was cleared for this crop. Trees are planted on degraded land, where farming practices increase CO2 uptake and Oxygen production, and are fertilized with organic, self-made compost. Small farmers are encouraged, strengthening rural communities. Communities are educated on healthy living practices; our supplier recently hired a community doctor and a soccer coach for the local school.
