Buckwheat groats are the hulled seed of the buckwheat plant. Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat as it is not a grass. It is related to sorrel, knotweed, and rhubarb. It is a naturally gluten-free grain and highly nutritious containing high levels of fiber, protein, and iron. With a mild, earthy flavor and off-white to beige color, buckwheat groats are a nutritious ingredient to add to soups, salad, cereal, and bread. They are also commonly used as an ingredient to make beer and whiskey.
