Also known as "glycerol", vegetable glycerin is a very versatile ingredient. It has three main uses which include that of being a humectant, solvent and sweetener. As a humectant, it is used as an additive in the body care industry to retain moisture in the skin. It also provides skin-softening and soothing properties. Coming from all natural sources and being non-toxic, it is one of the most popular cosmetic additives used today. It is a clear, colorless and odorless liquid that is the consistency of a thick sweet-tasting syrup. Given this, it is also used in the food industry as a sweetener in many products. It is soluble in both water and alcohol.

Suggested Use

Liquid vegetable glycerin has a wide variety of uses both in the food and body care industries. In the food industry, it is used as a sweetener (60% as sweet as sucrose) and as an additive to help preserve food. In the body care industry, it is used as an ingredient in shampoos, soaps, and other cosmetics. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as a solvent to make toothepaste and botanical extracts. Many people are sensitive to the alcohol used as a solvent to make tinctures. Liquid vegetable glycerine is an alternative to alcohol.

Shelf Life and Storage

Product shelf life is dependent on storage conditions and is highly variable. Products should be stored under cool, dry conditions and in a humidity controlled environment. Industry standard for product, when stored under optimum conditions, is 24 months from the date of manufacture.
