Raisins are dried grapes. The variety or raisin depends on the type of grape being used. In the U.S. the most common type is the Thompson seedless select grape. In other parts of the world, these are known as sultanas. Grapes are a healthy alternative to sugary snacks. They contain a high percentage of natural sugars, fructose and glucose, up to 72% by weight. They also contain protein (approximately 3%) and dietary fiber (approximately 4-7%). Low in sodium and fat, they contain essential vitamins and minerals including copper, iron and boron (known to aid in bone and joint health). These specific raisins are coated with a thin layer of sunflower oil to prevent them from clumping together. They are ideal for cooking, baking or blending into a trail mix.
Because raisins are high in natural sugar, they can start to crystallize over time giving them a gritty texture. This is not an indication of poor quality. If this happens, the raisins can be quickly blanched in hot water to make them soft again.
