From our experience, EcoSoya™ brand container blend soy wax is one of the highest quality waxes you can use to make container candles. Not only is it very easy-to-use, it is also biodegradable and environment friendly. It is made from 100% natural soybean oil which is a non-petroleum renewable resource. It is also blended with a carefully selected proprietary blend of botanical oils. No pesticides or herbicides were used to make this wonderful wax. It comes in the form of opaque, creamy, off-white flakes making it easy to handle, melt and pour into containers.
The soybean oil used to make the flakes is grown, harvested and processed in the USA.
EcoSoya™ container blend soy wax is designed specifically to make container candles, tarts and melts. It has some very specific attributes which make it such a desirable wax for these types of candles. It contracts slightly as it cools which produces a smooth, consistent appearance. It is also "frost" resistant and creates a smooth, even burn pool of hot wax around the wick allowing for a higher quality flame and consistent burning. Especially notable is the fact that the containers or jars that you choose to use don't need to be pre-heated before pouring in the warm wax. Fragrances & Essentials Oils: Most types of fragrances and essential oils will work to add an aroma to your soy wax container candles and tarts. We recommend to always test a small batch first though just to make sure. Some fragrances may react poorly causing issues with your candles including colorant bleed and/or poor flame quality. In order to achieve the highest amount of scent throw, we recommend to add your fragrance or essential oil prior to pouring but at a temperature no less than 135 degrees F. The optimum scent throw is achieved with a full diameter burn pool of hot wax at a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The fragrance load is about 18% Max.Colorant: Only use colorants that are specifically for candle making. It is important to check with the supplier first to make sure the colorant you are purchasing will work with soy wax. For a stronger depth of color in soy candles, we suggest to use approximately 30% more colorant than the recommendation on the packaging for the colorant. Due to its creamy, off-white color, soy wax tends to mute the color somewhat.
Wicking: For container soy candles and votive soy candles, we recommend to use HTP (high temperature paper) wicking. As a general guideline, we suggest the following sizes for soy candles:
Up to 1" diameter candles - use medium HTP
For 1" to 2" diameter candles - use large HTP
For 2" to 4" diameter candles - use extra large HTP
For anything larger than 4" diameter - use multiple wicks spaced 2" apart
Note: The suggestions listed above are general guidelines only. We always recommend to do some test batches to determine the best size of wick for the candles you are making. Fragrance, colorant and candle type all can have an impact on the type of wick to choose. Too large of a wick may cause soot build-up at the top of the wick and/or quick burn times.. If you experience any of these or a poor flame quality, we recommend to try a different size of wick.
Melting: If you are using a colorant with your soy wax, we recommend to melt the wax to a minimum of 155 degrees F using the double boiler method with gentle agitation of the water in the base pan. This allows for even heating and thorough blending. Temperatures that are higher than 190 degrees F may cause the soy wax to discolor. After melting, allow the wax to cool to the recommended pouring temperature.
The following are general guidelines for pouring temperatures. These temperature may vary depending on the container type and size, fragrance or essential oil and colorant used. Please note that it is typical for the CB advanced soy wax to solidify at first pour around the edges of the container. A good indication of the pour temperature being high enough is that the initial solidified wax around the edges of the container re-melts upon filling the container. However, the temperature may be too hot if the liquid wax sits more than 30 minutes before starting to solidify. Pouring CB advanced soy wax at lower temperatures is the most ideal as this creates a smooth candle surface on the top with good adhesion to the container. For candles larger than 8 ounces in size, the suggested pouring temperature is 125 degrees F. These candles cool more slowly and require this lower pour temperature. For candles less than 8 ounces in size as well as candles poured into metal or tin, the suggested pouring temperature is 155 degrees F. These types of candles cool more quickly and require the higher pouring temperature. Cooling too quickly or too slowly can cause your candles to concave at the top or to frost on the surface. If you experience difficulties with your pouring temperatures, try a lower or higher temperature in increments of 10 degrees F. It is important to note that if you are adding fragrance or essential oils to your wax and are pouring at lower temperatures, you should add your fragrance at a higher temperature of approximately 135 degrees F and then allow the wax to cool to the desired pouring temperature.
Cooling: We recommend to cool your poured candles at an average ambient temperature of 70 degrees F. If you have multiple cooling candles, we suggest to space them at least 1/2" apart to allow for air to circulate around each. Slower cooling will allow for the wax to adhere to the container whereas faster cooling will promote wax to pull away from the container. At a minimum, cooling candles should sit undisturbed for 48 hours before burning (larger diameter candles may take longer).
Trouble Shooting: If you are experiencing problems with flame quality, burn time, too small or too large hot wax pool, etc., we recommend to test one variable at a time to isolate the cause of the problem. For example, make a candle with only a wick (no fragrance or color). If it looks good and has a good burn quality, then the wax and wick is performing normally. Then add another variable such as fragrance to see how it reacts with the wax and wick. Keep adding another variable until you find the one that is causing the issue. Variables can include wax, colorant, fragrance, wick, pour temperature, cooling temperature and environmental conditions within the room (ambient room temperature or too much moisture in the room).
Why this Wax?
We prefer soy wax over petroleum-based candles wax because it cleaner, cooler and longer burning. From our experience and our research, we have found that it can also prevent soot build-up at the top of the wick when burning your candle. It is not recommended to blend soy wax with other types of candle wax. It is best when used all on it's own.
When stored in a cool, dry location away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture; the soy wax flakes will last for a minimum of 3 years. Finished candles can last for up to 10 years.
