FORMIC PRO™ is the newest formic acid treatment on the market for varroa mites and taking the place of Mite Away Quick Strips (MAQS). It causes mortality to both male and female varroa under the brood cap as well as to the varroa on adult bees. It is to be used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program. With a high efficacy rate of 83-97%, FORMIC PRO™ is made from all natural raw materials. Formic acid has been used for over 30 years without any known resistance and now with FORMIC PRO™, it is easy to apply. The product is made up of an outer sachet that contains 2 formic acid polysaccharide gel strips which allows for the active ingredient to remain stable over time providing an extended shelf life of 2 years.
Formic Pro Instructions:
FORMIC PRO™ are residue-free so can be used to treat bees during the honey flow. To use, cut open the outer sachet and carefully remove and separate the strips. The strips are attached to an eco-paper wrap wick which shouldn't be removed from the strips. This biodegradable paper wrap is designed to act as a wick to control the release of the formic acid vapors over the 14 day treatment period. There are two treatment options when local thresholds are met:
Option One: 2 strips for 14 days
Option Two: 1st strip for 10 days; remove and replace with 2nd strip for an additional 10 days.
Timing: It is highly recommended to monitor phoretic mite levels monthly during periods of brood rearing and treat when local thresholds are reached. Treat during the colony population increase phase to protect the bees going into the honey flow. Treat during the colony decrease phase to protect the bees that will make up the winter cluster. In warmer climates additional treatments may be necessary due to longer brood rearing time. Missed treatments can lead to excessive varroa loads and may require more than one treatment.
Note: As with all bee medications, it is recommend to read and follow package instructions thoroughly before applying.
